WSPA Congratulates the University of Windsor for Putting the Chicken Before the Egg

happy hensThe World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) applauds the University of Windsor for using more humanely produced eggs on campus. The Crocodile Grill and the main kitchen at Vanier Hall have agreed to switch to cage-free eggs (free-run, free range or certified organic). The approximately 36,000 eggs that they purchase annually will now come from hens that have the freedom to move, nest and stretch their wings.

The WSPA worked with the Student Animal Legal Defence Fund (SALDF) - Windsor Chapter to encourage students to send letters and sign petitions in support of the campaign. "I am pleased with the decision and I know the student body supports it," says Waheeda Ekhlas Smith, a law student and President of the local SALDF chapter. "We are preventing countless hens from cruel treatment and lifelong suffering."

The campaign was also supported by the University of Windsor's Student Alliance (UWSA) which passed a resolution in favour of cage-free eggs last August.
